Botox Treatment - Botox Injections
BOTOX® Injection Basics
BOTOX® injections are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. It is also perhaps the best known and most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Botox® injection cosmetic contains botulinum toxin in a purified, injectable form that is used in cosmetic medical procedures to relax facial muscles. Because of its ability to prevent facial muscles from tightening and creating creases, Botox® injections have become highly popular for treating forehead and brow lines, as well as other types of facial wrinkles. Botox® may also help in reducing profuse underarm perspiration. BOTOX® injection is a very simple process that can be accomplished in about 10-30 minutes, depending upon the amount injected and number of desired treatment areas. Botox is the best brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large amounts, this toxin can cause botulism, which you probably associate with food poisoning.
FDA Approval:
In 2002, the FDA approved Cosmetic for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines. Botox® was approved in 2004 for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm perspiration) in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants. With nearly three million procedures performed, BOTOX® injections lead all cosmetic procedures in 2003. Americans spent over one million dollars getting the facial filler injected into their lips, folds, and wrinkles. BOTOX® has received several FDA approvals for treating everything from underarm sweating to eye twitches. Of course, it's most common use is for cosmetic purposes, for which it received FDA approval in 2002 under the product name BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Botox is used for:
* Forehead and brow wrinkles
* Crow's feet
* Chemical brow lift
* Wrinkles around the mouth
* Downturned corners of the mouth
* Gummy smile
* Muscular neck bands
* Profuse underarm perspiration
Botox Treatment:
As stated above, BOTOX® injection is a very simple process that can be accomplished in about 10-30 minutes, depending upon the amount injected and number of desired treatment areas. A topical anesthetic is used to numb the areas to be injected; then small amounts of BOTOX® are injected into predetermined areas with a thin needle. There is some pain or discomfort associated with the injections themselves, however, this is usually slight and does not persist after the injection process has taken place. Botox is made from Botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is normally known for its ability to cause a type of food poisoning called botulism that can be contracted from improper handling of meat products. However, in Botox, the botulinum toxin is diluted to a safe level for injection into humans. To manufacture it, the bacteria clostridium botulinum is allowed to develop and spore, and this causes the neurotoxin responsible for the paralysis of the muscles. Once the spores form, they emit the Botulinum toxin which can then be collected. The botulinum toxin is then so diluted that little of the actual toxin itself can be injected into the body. BOTOX® works by paralyzing the muscles in your face. Skin that cannot move cannot form lines and wrinkles.
Recovery:
Most women and men are able to return to work and other activities immediately after the Botox procedure is over. Return to work or normal activities are almost always immediate. There is usually little or no bruising, bleeding, pain, or other such discomforts. Touching or massaging treated areas should be avoided as this could disrupt the placement. The effects of injection usually last between 3 and 6 months.
Risks and Complications:
With any procedure, risks and complications can occur but in case of the Botox, they are generally very rare. Side effects are extremely uncommon and can include headache, temporary eyelid droop, nausea, and short-term pain or redness at the injection site. The most common complications are drooping eyelids or raised eyebrows. These side effects are not permanent as the paralysis from BOTOX® wears off.
