Orange Trees & Clover Plants
- Orange blossom honey has a mild citrus smell and flavor and is a tasty treat. Clover honey has long been considered an excellent sweetener and carries a slightly floral aftertaste. Some bee colonies tend to pick one type of crop at a time and will produce a honey from those blossoms. Beer brewers are fond of using both types of honey to produce mead.
- Clover fixes nitrogen in the soil and makes an excellent ground cover. A study by the University of Arizona found that orange yield was greater with clover growing around the trees than when the weeds underneath the trees were mowed. Bare soil produced the most fruit, but this tendency could be offset by more irrigation since the clover competed with the orange for water.
- Both clover and orange blossoms emit a sweet scent and carry nectar. This in turn attracts bees, as you might have noticed when walking through a clover-strewn lawn. The bees will in turn pollinate other plants, encouraging a generally healthier garden.
