China is a country with a vast territory where metallogentic geological conditions differ to some extent and mineral resources vary in variety and abundance from place to place. For instance, northern China is more abundant in coal resources, southern China in nonferrous metallic mineral resources, southwestern China in phosphate mineral resources, northwestern China in mineral salt resources, and northeastern China in iron ore resources. Such a heterogeneous distribution of mineral resources is an objective reality independent of man"s will. The resources occurring within the limits of each province or even each big administrative region may not always make up a complete set. Therefore, it is impossible to establish a small and all-inclusive economic system within each respective region. As far as the whole country goes, however, mineral resources, whether energy minerals or metallic and nonmetallic minerals, and staple minerals or rare minerals, are complete in variety and are fitted into necessary associations of principal minerals with auxiliary minesals.Just because the resources advantages of various regions are brought into full play, it has been made possible for the regions to complement one another with resources to form a complete set of resources nationwide, thus providing necessary mineral resources conditions for establishing an independent and integral economic system for the whole country.Since the founding of the People"s Republic of China in 1949, substantative geological exploration and mineral development activities have been carried out all over the country. A lot of such activities have been also undertaken in ten provinces (regions and municipalities) in West China, including Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Chongqing, Xizang (Tibet), Yunnan and Guizhou, which has contributed to the economic growth and the improvement of the people"s living standard in the western region of China. Due to various historical and realistic reasons, however, the economic development remains much unbalanced between the eastern region and the central and western regions and particularly shows a still greater difference between the eastern and western regions. The per-capita gross domestic product in 1998 amounted to 11,010 yuan for East China, 9,984.6 yuan for North China, 6,201 yuan for Central-South China, 7,597.7 yuan for Northeast China, 4,431.2 yuan for Northwest China and 3,887.2 for Southwest China.As indicated by available geological data, the difference in economic development level between the eastern and western regions is not attributed to the lack of resources in the western region. On the contrary, the vast western region is possessed of favorable metallogenetic geological conditions.
