How to Use Independent Clauses in a Sentence
Instructions
1Create compound and complex sentences by using independent clauses in your writing. Independent clauses are clauses that can stand alone and don't depend on the rest of the sentence.
2
Write an independent clause such as in the following sentence, "He went to the store." Notice that this sentence can stand alone because it is a complete thought and has a subject and a verb.
3
Recognize a clause as a group of words that includes a subject and a predicate. A dependent clause needs the rest of the sentence to make sense but an independent clause stands on its own.
4
Check if your clause is independent by removing the rest of the sentence. If it still makes sense on its own, then it is an independent clause.
5
Remove the clause from the following sentence: The cat chases the mouse and the dog chases the cat. If you take out the first clause, "the cat chases the mouse" and place it on its own, it still makes sense. Make sure you add a period to the end of the new sentence.
6
Add two independent clauses together with the word "and" to make a compound sentence. Compound sentences make writing sound more interesting as in the following sentence "He went to the store and he bought some cereal."
