Immigration to Australia - The Chamber of Commerce Debates
The Western Australia Chamber of Commerce has entered the heated discussion on immigration to Australia.
An already important subject in the upcoming elections for prime minister, the issue has the chamber of commerce concerned.
They believe both candidates for prime minister wish to declare their policy as most able to curtail immigration.
The chamber of commerce of Western Australia says that opposition leader Tony Abbott plans to slash the number of people making immigration to Australia by almost 130,000.
They fear that this will devastate the economy and retard job creation and growth in Western Australia.
They insist that the exact opposite is required and that in reality there is a need for about 500,000 workers over the coming decade.
The assumption they have adopted is that current population growth trends are going to fall and the economy will find itself short of about 210,000 workers by 2020.
What is needed in fact is more, not less, immigration to Australia.
They believe that history overwhelmingly shows that the state depends on overseas migrants, both temporary and permanent, in order to fill empty job positions.
For them, talk about cutting Australia's overall immigration quota puts the ability to build the projects necessary for the health of the economy at risk.
They claim citizens should not be afraid of increased immigration, on the contrary, should embrace, it since it is crucial for economic growth.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has already stated her opinion on the matter, promoting a sustainable population that grows the country according the resources it can provide.
The chamber of commerce of Western Australia claims that a calm, rational debate regarding immigration to Australia is needed and that the political community is going to have to work together with the business community in order to make it happen.
