Materials

Depending on the region, breech-cloths/loincloths, leggings and shirts worn by men and skirts/dresses worn by women were made of animal skins or hand-woven wool, cotton, grass, reeds or cedar bark.

Footwear

Moccasins, Native American footwear, were made of animal skins or, in some areas, wool. Moccasins were low-top or knee-high, plain or decorated, depending on the tribe.

Head-wear

Everyday head-wear ranged from basket-like hats woven from reeds/grasses to animal skin or woolen head coverings often decorated with feathers, animal teeth or bones. Ceremonial headdresses varied from tribe to tribe.

Woven

In later years (1800s), the introduction of wool bearing animals brought the art of woven woolen clothes, blankets, footwear and hand-wear for additional winter warmth and trading.

Decorations

Decorations on clothing ranged from silver buttons to very elaborate beading. Necklaces and other adornments were made from feathers, beads, animal bones and teeth as well as handcrafted silver.
