How to Visit Bend, Oregon
- 1). About a half hour from Bend, Mt. Bachelor draws alpine skiers, nordic skiers and snowshoers. If you want something closer, stop at a Sno-Park with your snowshoes or cross-country skis. To avoid getting a ticket at a Sno-Park, you can buy a pass for your car at a sports store in Bend.
- 2). Central Oregon is becoming a first-class golf resort destination, but that means paying resort prices for 18 holes. Ask about the reduced twilight rates at many courses.
- 3). The Deschutes River runs through town, and it's beautiful for kayaking, canoing and rafting. Several outdoor outfitters rent kayaks and canoes; you can join a raft trip at a resort or rafting company. Fishing is another major draw for tourists and residents. Take a trip with a guide service, or head out on your own. Some favorite spots are the Crooked River, the Deschutes River and the Cascade Lakes. Before you go, pick up a fishing license at a local outfitter.
- 4). Bend is a cyclist's paradise, with bike lanes everywhere and miles of bike paths. Cycling shops rent road and dirt bikes and sell maps of cycling trails. Hiking paths also are popular. Just ask at your hotel or a local sports store.
- 5). After all that outdoor exercise, you'll be ready for a good meal. Bend's charming downtown has several restaurants serving Thai, Indian, Japanese and other cuisine. For dessert, head to Goody's, the quintessential candy shop and ice cream parlor.
