106 6
Part one of two. This month's Blu-ray releases include one of Jerry Lewis' most memorable films; a popular small-town drama starring a who's who of future stars; a splashy musical directed by Vincente Minnelli; a little-known spy thriller starring Burt Lancaster; and a dark psychological thriller featuring Clint Eastwood.

1. ‘The Nutty Professor’ – 1963

Not to be confused with the Eddie Murphy remake from the 1990s, this great comedy classic starring Jerry Lewis as a buck-toothed, addle-minded chemistry professor celebrates its 50th anniversary with a debut on Blu-ray. Lewis delivered his most memorable performance as the shy, bumbling Julius F. Kelp, a college chemistry instructor tired of losing out on love who develops a potion that turns him into a smooth nightclub singer, Buddy Love, only to learn that he must learn to love himself first. The Nutty Professor comes courtesy of Warner Bros. by way of the studio’s deal with Paramount Home Entertainment and will feature some great extras, including the featurette Jerry Lewis: No Apologies; behind the scene footage; deleted scenes; screen tests; bloopers and outtakes; and the original theatrical trailer.

2. ‘The Outsiders’ – 1983

Another great release from Warner Bros., this 1960s-set small town drama featured a who’s who of soon-to-be stars like Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise finally sees the light of day on Blu-ray. Adapted from S.E. Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders focused on a rivalry between two rival teenage gangs – the Greasers and the Socs – in rural Oklahoma, particularly Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) and his lifelong friend Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio). But a deadly confrontation forces the two to hideout while learning that their gang posturing has amounted to nothing. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Outsiders will feature audio commentary from the filmmaker, as well as Howell, Macchio, Swayze, Lowe, Matt Dillon, and Diane Lane; the featurette Staying Gold: A Look Back at The Outsiders; S.E. Hinton on location in Tusla; The Casting of The Outsiders; and cast readings of Hinton’s books.

3. ‘Kismet’ – 1955

One of the many musicals from the 1950s directed by Vincente Minnelli, Kismet will make its debut on the Blu-ray format courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection. This oft-told ancient tale of Bagdad has seen several adaptations on stage and screen, both in musical and drama form, but Minelli’s version was the most colorful and opulent. The film starred Howard Keel as the poet of Bagdad who goes from poverty to millionaire in a day, Anny Blyth as the daughter he wants to marry off, and Vic Damone as the son of a local ruler who tries to win her hand. Kismet features a number of musical numbers, including “Baubles, Bangles and Beads” and “Stranger In Paradise,” though details about any technical specifications or added features remain unknown at this time.

4. ‘The Train’ – 1964

A tense spy thriller set during World War II, The Train will make a limited Blu-ray release this month courtesy of Screen Archives Entertainment. Directed by John Frankenheimer, the film starred Burt Lancaster as Labiche, a French railway inspector who is convinced to help stop a Nazi train loaded with Parisian artwork from leaving France, though he’s more intent on blowing up the train for the resistance because it’s loaded weapons. After a friend dies during a failed attempt to stop the train, Labiche has a turn of consciousness and vows to stop the train and save the art rather than destroy it. Only three thousand copies of The Train will be made available through Screen Archives, which declined to offer any details about technical specs or special features.

5. ‘Tightrope’ – 1984

A twisted take on Dirty Harry, Tightrope starred Clint Eastwood as a New Orleans detective chasing after a serial killer and makes its debut this month through Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Eastwood played Wes Block, a homicide detective trying to solve a string of brutal sex murders perpetrated by the same perpetrator, only to discover that he shares a common bond with the killer; namely they share the same taste in prostitutes. Dark and moody, Tightrope was something of an anomaly in Eastwood’s career, as the actor typically played less tortured characters. But just like Kismet, Warner Bros. has yet to release any specifics about any added features.
