How to Know If Your Cat Has a Urinary Tract Infection

104 10
    • 1). Keep regular watch over your cat at the litter box. If you notice that your cat is making regular attempts to urinate without success, a urinary tract infection may be the cause.

    • 2). Watch for a change in where your cat urinates. An infection may cause a loss of bladder control or dribbling urine. A trained cat that suddenly starts to urinate outside the litter box may have an infection or other health problem.

    • 3). Investigate you cat's urine. Check for blood or a strong ammonia-type odor, which may be signs of illness.

    • 4). Notice how much urine your cat is passing and if it cries out when trying to urinate. A cat with an infection may strain to urinate and pass only a small amount of urine.

    • 5). Observe your cat for signs of lethargy, vomiting or constant licking of the urinary opening, which may be signs of a urinary tract infection.
