How to Apply for a Temporary Social Security Number
- 1). Contact your company's Human Resources department to obtain the appropriate forms. "Dummy" social security numbers must be initiated by the employer for employees without an assigned number.
- 2). Make copies of any legal identification required. The number and types of identification accepted varies by state, but in most cases a birth certificate, driver's license and state ID will suffice.
- 3). Fill out the forms.
- 4). Mail the forms and ID to the appropriate state agency. In most cases, the state's Civil Service Commission will handle the paperwork.
- 1). Contact an authorized adoption agency to find out if the ATIN is necessary for your child. If the child was born in the United States and a social security number has not been issued for the child, an ATIN will be necessary to complete the adoption process. The temporary ATIN will become void once the adoption is complete and the child is assigned a permanent SSN.
- 2). Obtain the appropriate forms, specifically the W-7A, from the IRS.
- 3). Fill out the form as completely as possible with the information you know about your child and your own personal information.
- 4). Mail the form to the IRS office or locate a Walk-in office.
- 5). Wait for the IRS to issue you an ATIN. The process can take several weeks.
