Tips on Yellow Garlic Plants
- The yellow garlic plant, Allium moly, contains vitamin C, B and A and may help rid the body of toxins and carcinogens. The taste of yellow garlic is milder than that of the larger garlic varieties. Thanks to its beautiful flowers and plentiful bulbs, the yellow or golden garlic can be a welcome addition to your table and your garden.
- Yellow garlic or golden garlic grows to be 6 to 12 inches tall and has bright yellow flowers. The flowers begin to bloom in early spring and continue blooming until mid summer.
- For the best results, grow garlic in soil that is well drained. If the soil holds too much moisture, amend it with ashes or sand.
- Plant yellow garlic as late as November for a good crop the following year. Remove the outer skin of the clove and plant the yellow cloves near the surface of the soil. The yellow garlic will seed itself, or you can collect the seeds and start them in cold frames so they are ready to transplant into the garden in the fall.
- As the leaves begin to yellow, dig up the yellow garlic and dry it before storing. Lay the bulbs on a screen to dry, or bag them in string bags to allow air circulation. Cut the flowers and add them to any arrangement.
