How to Get Rid of Thorny Vines
- 1). Put on protective eyewear and gloves. Wear a long sleeved shirt, long pants and closed shoes.
- 2). Cut up as much of the vine as possible with the weed trimmer or long-handled pruning shears. Roots or seeds that fall on the ground can create new growth so be sure to collect all the pieces and place them in a plastic bag.
- 3). Dig up the root ball if you can reach it and place it in a plastic bag. If the roots are not accessible, for example, if the vine is growing out from between rocks, cut as close to the roots as possible.
- 4). Spray or paint a broad-spectrum herbicide onto the cut vines, taking care not to apply the herbicide to any surrounding vegetation.
- 5). Examine the area periodically for new shoots. Pull them out and repeat the steps above if necessary until the vine stops regrowing.
