    • 1). Contact your unit chain of command and inform them that you wish to initiate an Interstate Transfer (IST). Your initial contact with your unit commander may be done through email.

    • 2). Contact your state's IST officer. Such an officer may be assigned to your company locally, or you may need to contact the IST office for your particular state; your unit commander will be able to guide you in this regard. Tell the IST officer your new location and the approximate date of your move.

    • 3). Return any supplies that were issued to you by your present unit, except for clothing. Your IST officer will provide you with a list of items that must be returned. Fill out the transfer paperwork that will be supplied to you by the IST office.

    • 4). Contact a recruitment officer for the National Guard in the area where you will be moving and let the officer know that you wish to make arrangements to take the oath in your new state.

    • 5). Take the oath in your new state and report to your new unit as soon as your move is completed. It is possible to request a 90-day non-paid leave while the transfer is being completed, but this is not mandatory.
