Water is essential for life, and although you can survive several weeks without food you can't survive more than a few days without water. Our bodies are made up of about 60% of water and to keep it in peak working condition you should be drinking between 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.

One question that many dieters as is "does water speed up your metabolism?". The answer to that is definitely yes. If you lack water and become dehydrated your body starts to store water in the event of a drought, and this can add several pounds to your weight.

Once you start to drink sufficient amounts of water to rehydrate your body any toxins that have built up and stored water are flushed away.

You will feel more energised and look healthier as well. Water carries oxygen and this is essential for metabolism to work properly. When you drink water it helps to maintain the volume of blood which carries oxygen into the muscles and this helps to keep you physically active. This is very important if you are an athlete or have a physically demanding job.

A lack of water will put a strain on your kidneys and as a result the liver takes over the job of processing water. This means that it can't carry out other essential functions properly. One of the main tasks of the liver is to convert fat into energy.

If it's busy compensating for tasks that the kidneys should be doing then it can't process fats properly. As a result fat starts to get stored in the body and you will put on weight.

If you aren't used to drinking water you will find that once you start to increase your intake you will need to pass water more often, however as the body gets used to the extra water the frequency of passing water will reduce.

Water can seem very bland and hard to drink if you aren't used to it. Try adding a slice of lemon to a glass of cold water to make it refreshing, or try sparkling water. Lemon is a negative calorie food which means that it contains less calories than is needed to digest it. As a result eating lemon or grapefruit boosts the metabolism.

A good idea is to take frequent sips of water throughout the day. Always have a supply of water with you and if you go on long journeys in the car keep a bottle of water next to you. This will help your concentration and stop you from feeling tired. Often dehydration can not only affect your metabolism but also your concentration, memory and even make you dizzy, as well as sluggish and off colour.
