A Homemade Butcher Block
- 1). Set the guide on the table saw 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the blade. Cut the wood into 15 to 20 even strips.
- 2). Lay the strips on a flat surface so the cut edges face one other. Turn every other strip the opposite direction so the direction of the grain switches from piece to piece. The edges don't have to line up perfectly.
- 3). Apply a thin layer of wood glue between each strip of wood. Using three large wood clamps, clamp strips on the ends to press the pieces together tightly. Place one clamp in the middle and one on each end. Wipe away any wood glue from the seams.
- 4). Allow the clamped wood to dry for 48 hours, checking it periodically to ensure the strips of wood haven't slipped out of place.
- 5). Remove the clamps. Using the table saw, cut off the uneven ends of the strips, leaving a rectangle. Sand both sides of the butcher block with a belt sander. Sand the edges by hand. Wipe away the dust with a lightly dampened cloth.
- 6). Season the board with food-grade mineral oil. Pour one-quarter cup of oil on the surface and work it into the wood with a cloth, using a circular motion. Repeat on the other side. Allow the oil to soak in overnight before using.
