3 Rarely Known Home Hazards for Cats
While selling our home prior to our move to Georgia, one of the seller's requirements was to install smoke detectors in the kitchen ceiling, the bedroom hallway, and in the ceiling of all three bedrooms. I'm sure that over the years, we all have been familiar with the danger of house fires, not only for humans, but especially for our cats. We have even learned how to perform artificial respiration and CPR on cats.
We have read about hero cats who have saved the lives of people they loved. Perhaps the most touching was the story of Scarlett, who ran through fire, saving the lives of her kittens, one by one.
The second requirement was to install a Carbon Monoxide detector in the hallway between the three bedrooms. Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas, which can kill both humans and cats.
We are advised that if we have any cause to believe a cat has inhaled excessive amounts of carbon monoxide, we must remove it from the area immediately to a place outside where it can breathe fresh air. This is a veterinary emergency, and the cat should be taken immediately to a veterinarian. This article by PetMD provides follow-up information for symptoms to watch for following your cat's emergency treatment, and steps to take to help in her recovery.
