A mobile home dealer is required to obtain a license in order to operate legally. Licenses are issued by the state in which the dealership is located, and the requirements for licensing are established individually by each state. It is important that a mobile home dealer understand the state requirements for licensing prior to applying. - Most states have requirements for the location of a mobile home dealership, which must be met prior to the issuance of a mobile home dealer's license. These requirements may include approval of the location by a state representative, proof of lease or ownership for the property to be used for the dealership, and state fees for the location or locations to be used. Dealers should research state requirements for the location, which may also include size, office requirements, insurance requirements, spacing requirements for the mobile homes, and other guidelines for the setup and layout of the dealership.
- Most states also require that the dealer obtain a surety bond of a specified amount for the business. This bond is intended to protect the dealer, the property and any business associates, such as moving companies. The amount of the bond varies from state to state, and can be determined by contacting the state licensing agency. The dealer is also responsible for any fees required by the state. These may include annual fees, application and renewal fees for licensing, and fees involved with registering employees for the dealership, such as applications, fingerprinting, etc.
- Training requirements may include college courses or training seminars. Training typically must be completed prior to being issued a license; alternatively, the state may allow the training to be completed within a set amount of time after the license is issued. States may also require additional training to renew licenses.
- To obtain a sales or dealer's license, the dealer must also meet all requirements for the business when applying for the license. These requirements may include a valid business name, a sales tax number, a federal employer identification number and employee information.
