Crystal Viper - "Legends

About.com Rating

Legends is the third full-length from the Polish band Crystal Viper. Fronted by Marta Gabriel, Crystal Viper's sound straddles the traditional and power metal genres. You can hear many different bands in their sound, from NWOBHM groups to Running Wild to Hammerfall to Accept. They even cover Accept's “TV War” on this album.

The songwriting on Legends is straightforward with a lot of hooks and catchy choruses.

“Blood Of The Heroes” is a majestic power metal track, packed with screaming guitars and powerful vocals from Gabriel. She's a versatile singer, able to belt out the high notes, but also equally adept at more subtle and emotional vocals on tracks like the ballad “Sydonia Bork.”

Songs like “Goddess Of Death” have a classic feel, but Crystal Viper manage to make it more timeless than retro. And while they do a credible job on all the songs, the strongest ones are fast and aggressive, like “Night Of The Sin.” It's uptempo and has memorable hooks and some excellent musicianship.

Cover songs can be tricky, balancing the integrity of the original with creativity. Crystal Viper do a good job with “TV War,” putting their own spin on it, but remaining true to Accept's vision. North American fans may not be that familiar with Crystal Viper, but if you like classic/traditional metal, Legends is well worth seeking out.
