    Certification Programs

    • The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemology Society (IGS) provide training programs and certification for gemologists. GIA is a nonprofit organization that requires the highest standards in gem identification, research and education to uphold the integrity of the jewelry industry. IGS provides training programs for certification as a gemologist as well as membership, which provides access to research materials and online education in gemology.

    Courses

    • Students must complete courses in gemstone identification including diamonds and colored gemstones. The courses train the gemologist to grade and rate diamonds using specialized equipment. The GIA and IGS certification programs require students to complete the coursework to qualify for the credential. GIA students can attend classes on a GIA campus or online. The IGS certification course is an online program that includes access to educational materials and participation in a gem lending program, which provides the materials to identify gemstones.

    Examination

    • The examination for a gemologist certification requires the student to correctly identify gemstones and complete a written evaluation of the student's knowledge. The practical examination also evaluates the student's ability to grade gemstones. IGS requires students to identify and grade 15 gemstones and pass a 100-question examination to meet the requirements for certification.

    Benefits of Certification

    • For those planning a career in the jewelry industry, a professional credential with GIA or IGS demonstrates to an employer the knowledge and skills a job candidate brings to the table. Certification ensures the gemologist has the knowledge to identify, grade and rate gemstones professionally. The certification programs also provide a valuable education for jewelry and gemstone professionals planning to start a business in the industry.
