What Tasks Are Performed By the State Department of Corrections?
- The Department of Corrections is a wide body comprising numerous units with different functions, all geared toward the smooth running of the department as a whole. The administrative unit is responsible for the general administration, operation and management of the department. Its functions include the establishment of programs and policies, managing court cases and setting up special projects to further the vision of the Department of Corrections. The Planning and Budget Unit is responsible for ensuring that resources are allocated, managed and used in an effective manner. This unit also oversees construction and maintenance projects within the facilities of the Department of Corrections.
- The Inspections Unit investigates allegations of illegal activities like drug use and possession, and other types of criminal activities by inmates, departmental staff and visitors to state correctional facilities. The Inspections Unit does this with the intention of preventing the introduction of illegal drugs and other banned substances into correctional institutions. Culpability in any illegal activity could result in administrative or personnel actions against staff or inmates, or criminal charges by state police against perpetrators.
- The Institutions Unit manages the prisons and correctional facilities in counties. Its duties include providing secure housing, orientation of newly incarcerated offenders into the prisons or other correctional facilities, and emergency response within institutions. This unit is responsible for apprehending fugitives and transporting inmates between institutions, to medical appointments, court appearances and other scheduled appointments. The Institutions Unit is also responsible for handling probation and the release of offenders back into society.
- The Human Resources unit is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment for Department of Corrections employees. It also recruits new employees and negotiates labor contracts with employees on behalf of the department. The Human Resources unit also trains employees, volunteers and contractors engaged by the Department of Corrections. This unit develops and maintains a centralized payroll information for all units in the department.
