    Varieties

    • The purple wave was the first wave petunia introduced as ground cover. Since then, other varieties and colors have evolved. The easy wave series of hybrid petunias mound up to 12 inches and spread out 3 feet. Tidal wave petunias grow up to 3 feet tall and the double wave petunias have double blooms that appear to look like a carnation.

    Care

    • Wave petunias can survive in dry and hot conditions. The hybrid will stay in bloom until the first frost, but will need to be grown in full sun for at least six hours a day. Windy conditions don't seem to bother the wave petunias and soils must have good drainage as the hybrids do not soggy soil conditions.

    Planting

    • Unlike other petunias, wave petunias should be planted in a different location each year. Rotating between two plots is ideal to promote growth. Hybrid petunias are heavy feeders and the soil needs at least one year to rejuvenate before planting the next generation of wave petunias. Wave petunias grown in containers will need new soil in spring each year.
