Information on Creating a Car in Twisted Metal 4
- "Twisted Metal 4" was rebuilt almost from scratch after the games' previous developers, SingleTrac, left the series after "Twisted Metal 3." Taking advantage of advances in PlayStation since the older games, a more complex physics engine was added that allowed for more detailed car models and in-game tricks such as wall climbing and super-powered jumps. It is also thanks to this renewed software engine that the Create-a-Car mode is possible. Accessible from the game's menu, the Create-a-Car mode allows players to pick from a range of chassis to start their creation.
- Within the Create-a-Car menu, the car's size can be altered, depending on whether players want a powerful behemoth or a spritely vehicle capable of dodging attacks. A variety of special weapons can be bolted to the car: while regular attacks such as bombs, missiles and lightning are available to all cars by picking up the appropriate power-up, a single one-off special ability such as flame throwers or orbital lasers can be added while building custom cars. Shock absorbers can be added and customized to provide a smooth ride, or fast recovery from drops and crashes.
- With "TM4"'s heavy emphasis on style, it's inevitable that the game will allow you to modify your car's paint job to allow the most stylish take downs in battle. Beyond this cosmetic treatment, the Create-a-Car mode also allows you to pick a voice in which the car will issue "taunts" after successfully taking down an opponent.
- The original Sony PlayStation lacks internal memory. This means that there is no internal save game slot for "TM4" or any other game. Custom cars for "TM4" can be saved to external memory cards as part of the game's data. When designing a custom car within the game, simply ensure you have the memory card used to save "TM4" game data inserted into the console at all times and save when your design is complete.
- If working on a particularly complicated or powerful car, you may wish to save your progress as you go, so that your design is not lost if the machine accidentally crashes or loses power (as can happen on older consoles).
