Tips on Planting a Tifblue

104 16

    Season

    • Plant Tifblue blueberry bushes during their dormancy for best success. Aim for a late winter or early fall planting, before or after frost, respectively. Don't plant Tifblue cultivars if you get temperatures below 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, as these plants won't survive such temperatures.

    Site and Space

    • Tifblue blueberries require full sun for eight hours every day, and they will not bloom or produce a fruit harvest without sunshine. Choose a spot that gets full sun, good air circulation, immediate drainage after rain and at least 3 to 4 feet of space for growing.

    Soil

    • Tifblue bushes are more forgiving in regard to soil than some other varieties, but they still require rich, extremely acidic foundations. Dig into the top 16 to 18 inches of soil at any planting site and add 1 cubic foot of organic compost or peat moss to produce the right soil for blueberry bushes.

    Planting and Mulch

    • Backfill the hole with amended soil until it's only 4 inches deep. Spread the blueberry bush's roots in the hole and cover them with amended soil to complete the planting. Water the bush with 1/2 gallon of water to settle the soil, and mulch with 4 inches of acidic mulch such as sawdust or wood chips.
