How to Quickly Elevate Your Business to the Top of Your Prospect"s Mind
Imagine, you hop in a cab or on an elevator.
You look over and right there next you is the one person on the planet who could change your business for the better, forever? What would you say to him or her? What if you only had 5 minutes to speak with them? What if you only had one? Are you ready with your elevator-infomercial? What is an elevator-infomercial? An elevator-infomercial is a quick speech about your business.
It's as complete and as compelling as possible.
What makes it special, is it's delivered in less time than it takes to reach your floor on an elevator.
Here's a couple of exercises to help craft your elevator-infomercial and make it consistent with your marketing materials.
-Ask a neutral party to look at your business card or brochure for 30 seconds.
Use a timer.
-Ask them to explain to you what your business does.
What services do you provide? By looking over your marketing materials are they able to take away the message you intend? Without any explanation from you and based solely on the provided business card or brochure, see how accurate they are about your business.
-Record what they tell you and be prepared to learn a lot about how you're currently presenting your business to your prospects.
-If you're really brave, go out and look for 3-10 people who fit your customer profile and try this exercise.
Do the same thing as above but with a slight twist.
Let your prospect know that you're a new business owner and you're conducting market research.
-Present your marketing material.
-Have a blank sheet of paper with a line drawn the middle, ready to record their feedback.
-On one side, record what your neutral party tells you and on the other side write down what you would like to hear.
-Before you compare them take 1 minute (use a timer) and give an unrehearsed speech about your business.
-In the mind of your prospect, how consistent are your elevator-infomercial and marketing materials? Remember, confusion is the best customer repellent to your company and consistency is key in any business.
People are busy.
Customers have only a few minutes or less to learn about what your business has to offer.
Investors and partners have only a few seconds.
Ask yourself this.
In the time allotted, have I effectively explained who or what my business is about? Be honest and if not, change it! Keep this up until your comparisons are as close as can be.
This combination of quick consistency will elevate your business to the top of your prospects mind.
With these steps you'll be doing market research and getting accustomed to speaking with random folks about your business.
Later, when it's time to train others to speak about your business you'll know exactly what to tell them to say.
Now how's that for multi-tasking?
