The Relics Found in Pyramids
- The antechamber is the first room reached within the pyramid. These are typically filled with smaller items the pharaoh used during his life, and in the case of Tutankhamen's tomb, it was filled with statues and gold couches. Children's board games sat beside weapons such as daggers and shields. Woven baskets, clothes, herbs and perfume bottles -- perfume was highly valued by the Egyptians -- were found alongside more mundane items such as food, lamps and torches.
- The pharaohs took a selection of furniture with them so they might be comfortable in the next life. Elaborate beds, with bedheads carved in the shape of lions and cows, many of them inlaid with gold, and sometimes made entirely of gold have been found. In Tutankhamen's tomb, among the many stools and chairs there is one for a child, and another where the chair cover is worked to look like leopard skin. The pharaoh's throne was usually included. As an example, Tutankhamen's throne was carved from wood and gold-plated, then inlaid with precious gems and silver.
- Most of the jewelry found in the tombs was made of gold, although some items were made from ivory. The Egyptians were particularly fond of pectoral pendants, necklaces and bracelets. Many of these used traditional designs that included scarabs (beetles) jackals and birds of prey. One splendid example from Tutankhamen's tomb is a gold falcon-shaped pendant and a gold falcon collar. Lapis lazuli and carnelian are the stones used in the many rings, brooches and earrings retrieved from the tomb.
- The Egyptians liked statues representing their gods. In Tutankhamen's tomb, a statue of Anubis guarded the royal treasury. Anubis was the jackal-headed god of the dead. so statues of him appeared in most tombs. In Tutankhamen's tomb there were many statues of the pharaoh; some of them were small busts, but others were life-size statues, some depicting him as a hunter. Sculptures of animals, particularly the ibex, the cow, the lion and the cobra also appear in the pyramid tombs.
