Proper Dress Code for a Banquet
- Black tie attire suggests a formal event and it is often printed on the bottom of the invitation in the simple script of "Black Tie." There are occasions where the event is "Black tie optional," which means the attendee has the option to dress in black tie attire or semi-formal attire. Black tie attire for men includes tuxedos with a bow tie or a dark suit, both with black shiny shoes. Summer attire is similar and includes a white dinner jacket, black tuxedo pants and coordinating shoes. Black tie attire for women includes an elegant, floor-length gown, cocktail gown that hits just below the knee or a dressy little black dress. Coordinate shoes and accessories with the outfit.
- Less formal than black tie, semi-formal attire gives both men and women a little breathing room. Semi-formal attire is the go-to look when you are not sure whether the event is formal or slightly casual. Men should wear dark business suits with a conservative tie; vests are optional but acceptable, dress shirt and leather shoes in a coordinating color. Women are safe with the little black dress, a shorter cocktail dress, dressy skirt and coordinating top and coordinating accessories.
- Similar to semi-formal, cocktail attire is less conservative and more fashion-forward. Cocktail banquets suggest a reason to dress up and have a good time; therefore, women should always wear a cocktail dress. The dress can range from short --- just above the knees --- to long, depending on the preference of the woman. She should wear coordinating accessories and shoes. Men can wear dark suits with an optional tie, dress shirt and leather shoes.
- Casual attire is laid-back and relaxed. There are few rules when it comes to wearing casual attire. Men should wear what they are comfortable wearing, such as cargo shorts, jeans and khakis. Match the pants or shorts with a polo shirt, turtleneck and loafers or sandals. Women can wear summer dresses, cotton skirts with blouses, jeans and T-shirts. Sandals, boots and wedges are appropriate but no flip flops --- those are only for the beach.
