So now that you have bought a mobility scooter, it has become a lot easier for you. Chances are that your scooter would have come with two batteries with a 12 month guarantee against any manufacturing defect. However, the truth is that the battery life of the scooter varies a lot, so you need to be careful. If well maintained they can last much longer. Also, your scooter will be as good as new if taken care of regularly. Here are some tips that will help you take care of your scooter and its batteries to make them last long:

  1. Battery Care: Use your batteries to the maximum before charging them again, when they are new. If the battery is half full, avoid keeping them on charge when the scooter is not in use. Get into good charging habits, do not just charge the batteries after a small trip to the nearby store. It is not good for the batteries if they are unplugged before being fully charged. They tend to lose their energy faster this way. The best option is to charge the batteries overnight, when there are very less chances if interruption. Another tip that you must never ignore is, that the batteries should never be overcharged. If your scooter gets wet due to any reason, the first thing that you should do it to take the batteries out and wipe them dry, as dampness can adversely affect the battery life.

  2. Scooter Cleaning: It is important to keep your scooter clean, to last it long. To ensure this, make sure that you clean it regularly. Wipe off any dust or dirt, make this a regular habit. Use a soft and damp cloth to clean the scooter from outside. If you are going for heavy duty cleaning (which must be done at periodic intervals) then use only the recommended solutions or cleaners. Cleaning the underside of the scooter is also important, do not forget this.

  3. Tire care: If you are using pneumatic tires for your scooter then, maintain the air pressure well. This not only ensures a smooth ride, but also increases the life of the tires. So you would not be bothered to change the tires sooner than expected. Cleaning tires of any debris, is important too when you are cleaning your scooter.

  4. Periodic Inspections: You must be taking very good care of your scooter and must be very proud of the fact, but there are things that are not under your control and even you cannot take care of it. Hence, a periodic inspection at a local shop is important. They may be able to spot a problem that you may have ignored!

  5. Read the manual: This may not seem like the maintenance step, but this is very important. A thorough maintenance schedule is always mentioned in the scooter manual, so if you take the advice of the manufacturer to take care of your scooter, you can be saved from the unwanted trips to the repair shops.
