How to Search Trademarks in the US
- 1). Visit the United States Patent and Trademark Office website to search for pending and registered U.S. trademarks. Click on "Search Marks" under the Trademarks heading. You can do a basic search with a particular term, browse through a list of trademarks, or search by registration date.
- 2). Enter the trademark you are searching for in a search engine. You may not be able to use the name if another company has been using it; even if it is not registered.
- 3). Search domain names at a domain name registrar. ICANN.org has a list of registrars.
- 4). Search your state's trademark database through the Secretary of State's office website.
- 5). Use a paid trademark search engine to search for trademarks. Some companies, such as BizFilings and Thomson CompuMark, will search federal and state trademarks for a fee.
