Choosing the Type of Birdhouse

• Decide what type of bird you wish to attract. Base your decision on the species of birds you have observed in your yard, or the birds you know are native to your area. Certain styles of birdhouses fit the needs of specific bird species. For example, a birdhouse or nest box with a small-diameter opening will attract bluebirds and wrens.
  
  

Choose a Pattern

• The birdhouse's pattern or blueprint specifications will determine the amount of material needed to make your birdhouse. Be sure you understand the instructions and measurements.
  
  

Gather Materials

• Use 1x8, 1x10 or 1x12 widths of lumber for your birdhouse. Choose pine or cedar (cedar will last longer due to the wood's natural weather resistance). You will also need to make sure you have all fasteners and necessary tools on hand to build the birdhouse.
