The 2002 7.3-liter Ford engine, named the Power Stroke diesel, is actually manufactured by International. Production of this engine began in 1994 and lasted until about mid-2003. This turbo-diesel engine was an option on all 2002 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty models. There were two 7.3-liter diesels available in 2002; a "high-compression" and a "low-compression" model. The low-compression model was manufactured in an attempt to meet the stricter emissions regulations in 2003.

    Horsepower

    • The horsepower of any engine is important, but in a large truck engine, it becomes even more important. A truck needs to have the power to pull heavy weights long distances. The high-compression" 7.3-liter engine produces 275 horsepower at 2,800 rpm, while the low-compression model produces 250 horsepower at 2,600 rpm.

    Torque

    • Torque is the engine's twisting power, which directly affects acceleration. This rating also affects how efficiently a vehicle can accelerate while pulling a heavy load, which is important to a large truck. The high-compression 7.3-liter produces 520 foot-pounds of torque 1,600 rpm, while the low-compression model produces 505 foot-pounds at 1,600 rpm.

    Internals

    • The 7.3-liter engine in 2002 is a V-8 with an overhead valve (OHV) configuration and two valves per cylinder. The compression rating of the high-compression model is 17.5-to-1, while the low-compression model is rated at 17.1-to-1.

    Displacement

    • The 7.3-liter Power Stroke has a bore, the overall width of the cylinder, of 4.11 inches and a stroke, the distance the piston travels in the cylinder, of 4.18 inches. These two ratings combine to create the total displacement of the engine, which is 444 cubic inches.
