When you go to college, you bring along a number of items with you. One of these is your computer. Today most college students use laptops as they are easier to carry around campus to use in class. One issue that unfortunately happens at many colleges is that laptops are stolen. They are light weight and very valuable making them an easy target. Below we will discuss what you can do that will help you prevent your laptop from getting stolen.

Do not leave it alone when you are in class. You might get there early and set up your laptop then leave to go talk with your friends or use the restroom. This laptop sitting there alone is a target to be stolen. You might think that someone will stop the person, but not everyone will know the thief is stealing versus just picking up a laptop they own.

When you leave your dorm room, get into the habit of locking up your room. This will keep your laptop and other items in your room more secure. Many get into the habit of not locking the room, but doing so will just be an invitation to thieves.

Hide the laptop when you leave it in your room. When it is on your desk, a thief has easy access to steal it. Leave your laptop in a drawer or your laptop bag that is out of sight.

Label the laptop with your name and other information. This should be in sticky tape that is hard to remove from the laptop. You could even carve this information into the plastic on the laptop. Thieves tend to not want to be caught. Seeing this can be a deterrent as it won't be as easy to sell.

Invest in a laptop cable system. Some use these at their desks to secure the laptop physically to the desk. These are the same systems that you see on laptops in electronic stores.

Protect you data with passwords. If it is stolen, you want to keep any personal information safe.
