Question: Who was the Last Tsar of Russia?

Answer: The last Tsar (Emperor) to rule Russia was Nicholas II. He succeeded to the throne on November 1st 1894 and ruled until March 2nd 1917, when a military and political crisis partly triggered by World War 1 caused him to abdicate. Crucially, and technically illegally, he also abdicated on behalf of his son Alexis; the crown thus passed to Nicolas’ brother Michael, but he refused to accept the it until a Constitutional Assembly was formed to formally invite him.

However, Russian politics led to a different course of action, and Michael never took the crown, leaving Nicholas as the last Tsar. He and his immediate family were killed by Bolshevik troops in 1918.
