What Are Greek Worry Beads Used For?
- Greek worry beads are simply a string of beads, typically between 19 and 23 beads, tied into a loop. The difference between Greek worry beads and worry beads of other cultures is that the Greek variety has excess string, allowing the beads to slide and move.
- While originally made to assist in prayers--with a prayer said for each bead--Greek worry beads are now used to relieve stress and anxiety. The beads are manipulated in the hand and slid along the string, with the reassuring tactile sensation and clicking sounds aiding in relaxation.
- Wood, glass, metal, stones or jewels may all be used as beads. A decorative tassel also adorns the knotted end of the string.
- According to Greek tradition, the orthodox monks of Mount Athos made the first Greek worry beads.
- The Greek word "komboloi" comes from the words "kombos," meaning knot, and "leo," which means to say. When put together, "komboloi" means, "In each knot, I say a prayer."
