    • 1). Wait until the threat of frost is over in the spring and the temperature has risen to at least 60 degrees F.

    • 2). Choose a planting area that is in full sunlight and that has well drained soil. In addition, since the asparagus seed bed must remain undisturbed for several years, choose an area of the garden that is not used for anything in other growing seasons.

    • 3). Spread a 10-20-10 fertilizer onto the area at a rate of 20 lbs. per 1,000 sq. feet of garden space. Place a garden tiller at the edge of the planting area and set the blade depth to 6 inches. Run the tiller over the area to mix in the fertilizer and loosen the soil.

    • 4). Poke 1/2 inch deep holes into the tilled soil and space each hole 2 inches apart. Drop one asparagus seed into each hole and cover it with soil.

    • 5). Water the asparagus seeds until the soil is damp to a 1 inch depth.

    • 6). Remove weeds from the planting area weekly to prevent them from consuming soil nutrients.
