Safety of Hydrogen Fuel
- Hydrogen offers an attractive alternative to fossil fuels, one with less environmental impact. The byproduct of hydrogen fuel cells that produce electricity is water vapor, unlike the harmful hydrocarbons produced by other fuels.
- Despite memories of the infamous Hindenburg airship explosion, hydrogen does not pose an unusual risk of fire or explosion. Gasoline and other commonly used fuels ignite from a spark just as easily as hydrogen does.
- Drivers should feel as safe behind the wheel of a hydrogen-powered car as they do when driving a gasoline-fueled one. In an impact, a hydrogen car may even prove safer, as the ruptured fuel tank would simply emit harmless hydrogen gas into the air instead of spilling toxic, flammable liquids.
