How to Make a Root From Tree Cuttings

    • 1). Fill a potting flat or small pot with moist potting soil.

    • 2). Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting.

    • 3). Cut a 1/2-inch deep notch in the butt of the cutting with a sharp knife. The wound will encourage the cutting to put down roots.

    • 4). Pour a small bit of the rooting hormone into a separate container (to avoid contaminating the main supply). Dip the bottom 1/2 inch of the cutting in rooting hormone. Then tap the cutting a few times to knock off any excess.

    • 5). Insert the cutting into the soil mix deeply enough that it can stand on its own.

    • 6). Stand a plastic freezer bag (or clean milk jug with the cap on and bottom cut off) over the pot. The plastic will keep temperature and humidity high.

    • 7). Place the cuttings where they will receive indirect sunlight for six to eight hours per day.

    • 8). Lift the bag once daily to check the soil's moisture level. Water as necessary to keep the soil moist.

    • 9). Test to see if the cutting has rooted in roughly one month. Pull up gently on the cutting. If it resists, it has put down roots. Move the pot into direct sunlight, and remove the plastic bag. If the cutting does not resist, replace the plastic bag, and check again every two to three weeks. If the cutting shows any signs of death or decay, throw it away.
