In Paraty, RJ, one of the most important contributions to the preservation and renovation of local caiçara culture is Silo Cultural José Kléber. Caiçaras, whose ancestry is a mix of Portuguese, indigenous and African people, live maily along the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná.

Learn about the silo, the creation of a musician and a choreographer from Paraty, and how its work is inspired by the rich caiçara heritage and life today.

1. Overview of Silo Cultural José Kléber

Named after native poet and musician José Kléber (1932-1989), Silo Cultural José Kléber is a cultural center in Paraty, RJ dedicated to the preservation and fostering of the traditional culture of caiçaras, the local native communities.

The silo is maintained by Instituto Silo Cultural, a nonprofit organization created by musician Luís Perequê and choreographer Vanda Mota.

An important part of the work developed at the silo is a partnership with the Paraty city administration which affords local children the chance to get involved in dance projects and other creative pursuits.

The Caiçara House, one of the attractions on the Silo property, incorporated techniques used by traditional caiçaras in the building of their homes.

2. Instituto Silo Cultural

Dance classes, musical presentations and cultural get-togethers take place at Silo Cultural José Kléber. The institute also stays busy participating in caiçara culture meetings in other parts of Brazil, such as the Fandango and Caiçara Culture Meeting in Guaraqueçaba, Paraná.

If you’re interested in caiçara music and dance in general and Paraty’s most genuine culture in particular, the silo is a great place to visit and learn from. Through Instituto Silo Cultural, you can also find out more about candombe, an Afro-Uruguayan rhythm which has become part of the Paraty cultural scene thanks mainly to the Ilú Ayiê group.

The silo doesn't host as many events as Casa da Cultura de Paraty, so write or call for information about visiting.
