On the busy corner of Fradique Coutinho and Arthur de Azevedo, in São Paulo's Pinheiros district, Le French Bazar draws the passer-by with its upbeat-retro style. The facade, which evokes Paris bistros, is a deep shade of red; the bar with an awning faces the street. Chalkboards and mirrors bearing the day's specials, new posters and vintage photos are part of the interior design.
The overall result is very sympa.
Chef Dudu Borger adds an author's slant to classic French cuisine. One of his pièces de résistance is the curry seafood cassoulet, served on weekends.
Le French Bazar approaches lunch with TLC: there are always several specials, which change constantly, in the R$28,50-to-R$33 range.
There's always the Quiche du Jour and the Fish du Jour on the lunch menu; other attractive options are galinha caipira (free-range chicken) with broccoli rice.
On Thursdays, lunch time is even better - that's when the bistro offers free wine tasting (from noon to 3 p.m.) featuring labels from the Cahors e Madiran regions in France, Sicily, in Italy, and Toledo, Spain as well as some Hungarian and Bulgarian choices. Other labels are available to be paid for by the glass.
Start the meal with one of the mini apéritifs. Some classic cocktails, available in the mini size, have surprising touches: the passion fruit margarita has fruit foam with tequila and Cointreau; the mojito is served with peppermint ice.
Luscious desserts include crème brûlée, tarte tatin and profiteroles, filled with doce de leite ice cream and covered with hot Belgian chocolate.
