    • 1). Test your pool water for chlorine content, using the test kit. Record the result. Normal and safe chlorine levels are between 1 and 3 parts per million.

    • 2). Set your filter to the waste setting and run the pool equipment until the water levels lowers a few inches, or vacuum water directly out of the pool using vacuum equipment.

    • 3). Add fresh water from a water hose into the pool until the water line is at its normal level. Take and test a sample of your pool's water and look at how many points the chlorine level changed. If the level is quickly approaching the normal range, repeat the draining and filling process. If not, head for your local pool supply store.

    • 4). Purchase the correct amount of chlorine neutralizer according to your test results. Ask your local pool professionals for help if you cannot determine the correct amount of chemical to use.

    • 5). Put on gloves. Pour the correct amount of chlorine neutralizer directly into your pool's water. Let the pool equipment run for at least 12 hours. Test your pool water to make sure the chlorine level is correct.
