    Destination Fun!

    • Destination Fun! is an activity that helps a fourth-grader measure time and distance as it applies to fun places she will travel outside school. Using a spray bottle, compass and chalk, the child draws a "home base" on the ground. According to Education.com, you can work together with the child to identify several locations she will be traveling to over the summer. You can use any season or time period, such as spring break, for this activity. Allow her to create construction paper arrows and label each with a location, distance from home base and corresponding travel time. Before traveling, she can practice by placing the arrow in the right direction. Education.com recommends that the fourth-grader measures how long the trip takes during travel and compares the actual values to those written on the paper arrows.

    Sugar Cube Towers

    • Sugar Cube Towers is a game that challenges your fourth-graders to build a tall tower using sugar cubes as they learn to measure volume. In this activity, Education.com notes, your fourth-grader builds rectangular prisms of any size and then measures the structure. How many sugar cubes long, wide and high (volume equals length times width times height) is it? The child can verify her answer by deconstructing the prism and counting the cubes, and she can build bigger structures for more practice.

    Angle Measurement

    • Angle measurement is both a lesson and series of games made for use with SMART Boards. The partially automated lesson takes students on a journey of discovery with angle types (obtuse, right) and tools to measure degrees (protractor). The game portion allows students to control a spaceship in a two-dimensional plane by answering lesson-related questions accurately. Another game in the lesson module challenges students to use the SMART Board's protractor or a real protractor to measure on-screen angles and drag them onto an angle category chart.

    Measure Teddy

    • Measure Teddy is a self-paced game for fourth-graders. The game requires an Internet-connected computer and headphones if played in a group setting to minimize the disturbance from sound effects. Players will practice measuring with a standard ruler. The object of the game is to accurately choose the correct measurement for a series of cartoon bears of different shapes and sizes. A student is rewarded with sounds and excited bears when she chooses the correct answer. The game is available from Apples4Teachers.com (link available in resources.)

      An in-class alternative to this online game would be to ask students to bring in their favorite stuffed animal to measure. Students can work in groups, measuring classmates' toys and then report findings to the entire class.
