AP World History Tutorials
- Students should create world history tutorials that deal with the various cultures that are being studied in the AP course. As the class begins to work with each of the cultures--Mayan, Egyptian and others--students should keep a separate piece of paper on which they jot down cultural ideas. These can include types of food that were eaten, bowls or other pottery used, specific dances, customs or religious practices, and family ideas. This list will then become a tutorial for the rest of the unit. Separating the cultural practices of each group will help the students separate one civilization from another.
- Students and teachers should create tutorials based around the history of the various cultures that they are studying. History notes should be kept separately. They should outline when the culture began, or what group of people began the culture. The history tutorial should also outline major events that happened in the history of the people being studied. Events might include wars, disasters, treaties and occupations. Significant individuals, such as kings, should also be noted.
- Another way to create a usable tutorial for AP world history is to look at the various ways to put historical events into a time line. Students can create a time line for each population they are studying. As events unfold within the culture, according to the lessons, the events should be categorized and placed onto a time line. The time line is an excellent study tool, because it allows students to look at the entire culture at once and see its rise and fall.
