The Benefits of Using a Seed Cleaner or Winnower and How it Works
The Seed cleaner otherwise know as a winnower.
A seed cleaner enables the user to separate husks, chaff or seed hulls and even dust left behind after a bird as eaten its birdseed.
This machine is commonly called a winnower.
The bird seed we use today is a mix containing various seeds which gives our birds a good balanced diet and these seeds have a inner kernel which is mainly the food source which is covered by an outer protection shell known as the husk.
When the bird picks up the seed it is rolled around the mouth also using the tongue which in turn separates the husk from the seed.
The husk then falls back in to the food bowl.
So all an Aviarian as to do is blow the husks away and refills the bowl with fresh seed.
As an Aviarian myself and keeping a large number of birds can you imagine the amount of husks and dust which is left behind in the food bowls eventually being thrown out along with a fair amount of good seed which can be very costly especially in today's market downturn.
A seed cleaner or winnower basically works by blowing a stream of air across a channel and back out through a vent and when you pour used seed in to this channel the heavier seed will fall through the stream of air and is caught in a small tub at the bottom.
The dust and husks will be blown along in to a second tub which is then discarded.
The fact that husks and dust is lighter than the seed itself makes this method possible.
There are various models on the market today which all will do a reasonable job but i myself have gone one step further I have improved all the ideas used for these seed cleaners and created a machine myself which uses a very low noise fan for blowing seed husks and the performance of this machine is absolutely outstanding.
This makes the hobby of bird keeping very pleasurable and in expensive for me knowing that you can save at least 25% on your seed bills considering we are now in times of recession.
