Pyelonephritis is the word used to mean kidney infection in the medical language. Kidneys eliminate toxins from the body and purify blood. When bacteria invade the urine, it causes kidney infection. The bacteria can infect the urethra from outside. This infection spreads to the kidney and from the kidney to the other organs. In extreme cases, it could lead to kidney failure and prove to be hazardous. Kidney infection causes include a few conditions as explained below.

Bacteria can enter the urinary system through the skin, vagina or the anus. Kidney infection is more common in women. The urethra of women is much shorter in length compared to men thus the reason for the infections. Sexual intercourse also causes urinary tract infection in women. If there is a bacterium present at the urethra, it enters the woman's body during sexual activity. Urinary infection leads to kidney infection if not cured immediately.

Kidney infection causes in women could include pregnancy. Pregnant women are prone to urinary and kidney infections. There is too much pressure on the ureters due to enlarged uterus. This causes slow passage of urine to the bladder. This could develop urinary infection followed by kidney infection.

The other factor responsible for kidney infection is the presence of kidney stones. They might cause recurrent or chronic infection in the kidneys. Stones are foreign bodies in the kidney. Bacteria thrive on stones and grow there. When one suffers from kidney stones, there is total or partial blockage in the flow of urine from the kidneys. Due to this obstruction, the urinary tract could get infection.

The other factor that could be responsible for kidney infection is enlarged prostate. Due to inflamed or enlarged prostate, there is accumulation of urine in the kidneys. Due to this, trapping of the bacteria in the urinary tract occurs and this leads to kidney and bladder infection. Such a condition is common with elderly men. At that age, it is also difficult for the body to fight diseases.

If children are born with abnormal ureters it is likely that they might suffer from kidney infection. They use X-rays that involve dyes to find if there is any blockage in the urinary tract. If found the blockage is removed and the infection is stopped from spreading.

Mostly kidney infection happens due to bacteria entering in the body. In very rare cases, the infection could be present in the bloodstream itself. Gram-negative sepsis is the term referring to this condition. Since it is the function of the kidneys to purify blood, they catch the infection if the blood itself is infected.

The symptoms of having a kidney infection include fever, nausea, chills and pain on the side of infected kidney. At times, a urine examination might suggest the presence of infection.

The bacteria responsible for kidney infection causes are the Germ negative bacteria. These bacteria are present in stools. It is possible that the bacteria enter the urinary tract from the stools. The urethra and rectum are close to each other. Once the bacteria infect the urinary tract, it could lead to kidney infection.
