I think probably anybody who has children or has spent any time around babies has seen cradle cap. It is a really common thing to happen to babies and it's really nothing that serious. All it is is a build up of oils on the babies skin. It is normally seen as a yellow scaling or a crusting on the babies scalp.

There are some simple things that you can do to manage cradle cap, and I am going to list some of those things below for you.

Make sure that you wash your babies head once a day. Make sure that you use a gentle baby shampoo and with a soft bristled brush, something like a soft toothbrush, gently scrub your babies scalp for a few minutes to take off the scales. You don't have to worry about hurting your babies had by doing this, as there are lot sturdier than you would think. Rinse your babies scalp well afterwards.

Before you give your baby the bath, you can apply baby oil to the cradle cap to help loosen up the scaling.

If the baby shampoo isn't effective at removing the scaling for you, then you might try using a dandruff shampoo, like Head and Shoulders or Selsun Blue. If you go this route though you need to be careful not to get any of it into your baby's eyes as is it can cause irritation.

If the cradle cap is looking red or irritated, then you might try applying a mild hydrocortisone cream. The something simple like Cortaid might help.

Although this is usually never anything serious, you can never be too cautious when it comes to your baby. If it starts looking funky or different from what is normally construed as cradle cap, then don't hesitate to make an appointment with your pediatrician and let them be the judge.
