- 1). Remove flaking paint, rust and corrosion from the fence with a stiff wire brush. If the damage is extensive, you might want to rent a sandblaster instead. Apply rust-inhibiting primer to any spots that still show signs of corrosion, and allow it to dry completely.
- 2). Place a drop cloth on the ground along a section of fence. Using a long-nap roller, apply the paint to the fence. Remove excess paint from the roller by rolling it up to the lip of the paint tray before painting to help avoid excess splatters. Work slowly across the fence, allowing the nap of the roller to fully coat each wire. Tamp down the grass with a sheet of cardboard as you reach the bottom of the fence for easier painting.
- 3). Use a small foam paintbrush to touch up around poles or near the ground where the roller is ineffective. Finish each section of fence completely before moving the drop cloth to the next section. When you finish the front of the fence, move your materials to the other side and paint it following the same process you used on the front.
