    • 1). Cut with a wood saw the wood piece of 2 feet-by-4 feet into three pieces: one 2-foot piece and two 1-foot pieces.

    • 2). Prop the two 1-foot pieces between the floor and the bike's front forks at approximately a 45-degree angle. These short pieces should extend forward from the front of the bike, forming a triangle with the floor and the bike.

    • 3). Hold one of the shorter pieces against the bicycle's frame and drill a hole through the wood into the bike's metal frame.

    • 4). Insert one of the sheet metal screws into the hole and turn clockwise with a screwdriver until the screw is secure against the fork. Repeat the steps for the remaining 1-foot length of wood.

    • 5). Lay the 2-foot piece of lumber on the floor and slide it up against the triangle just made with the shorter pieces of wood. Mark on one of the short pieces where the longer piece makes contact and cut it parallel to the floor at the point just marked.

    • 6). Slide the 2-foot piece under the shorter piece and arrange it so that the uncut support arm buts against the end of the longer piece.

    • 7). Drill two holes through the uncut support arm into the 2-foot piece. Insert two of the wood screws and secure them with a screwdriver. Repeat this step for the shorter support arm.

    • 8). Remove the stationary bike's original tension system. Then, drape the automotive belt around the bike's fly wheel. (At this point, the belt should be loose.)

    • 9). Slip the DC alternator's pulley into the belt. Then, secure the alternator to the 2-foot section of the 2-by-4 wood piece using the lag screws. (The alternator's pulley should be in the same plane as the bike's fly wheel to ensure proper operation and the belt should be taut.)

Cut about 1/2-inch of insulation from each wire in the lamp cord using the wire strippers. Grip one piece of the cord wire and twist it with an exposed lead from the alternator. Secure and insulate this connection by wrapping it with about 2 inches of electrician's tape. Repeat this step for the other lead and lamp cord wire.

Remove about 1/2-inch of insulation from the other end of the lamp cord using the wire strippers. Attach these wires to a light socket using electrician's tape, as in the previous step, and screw in a light bulb.

Pedal the bicycle to power the light bulb.
