    • 1). Saute garlic and onions in 1 tbsp. of butter or olive oil before adding the rice and water to the pot. If you're using a rice cooker, add chopped garlic and onions to the cooker before adding rice or water. The cooked garlic and onions will add flavor and texture to otherwise plain white rice.

    • 2). Substitute beef, chicken or vegetable broth in place of water when you're cooking the rice. You can use all broth, or replace only half the water with broth. Skip the additional salt if you use broth to cook the rice.

    • 3). Mix a jar of store-bought salsa into rice just before it finishes cooking. Allow the rice to absorb all the moisture from the salsa before serving.

    • 4). Add the juice of one lime to cooked with rice. The tart, tangy lime juice will give plain white rice a Mexican-style flavor.

    • 5). Stir fresh herbs into cooked white rice. Cilantro, basil and parsley are all excellent addition. Chopped green onions will do the trick as well.

    • 6). Add bite-sized chunks of fruit, such as pineapple or mango to cooked white rice. Stir in a few tablespoons of soy sauce, and you've got a perfect Asian side dish.

    • 7). Fry day old white rice with cooked vegetables, meat and an egg for a simple meal that satisfies and clears your refrigerator of leftovers.
