The History of the Bund
The Shanghai Bund has many historical properties, cellular lining the Huangpu River, which once stored a number of finance institutions and investing properties from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club. The Bund is situated in the north of the old and walled town of Shanghai. It was firstly a British arrangement. And later the British and American negotiations were merged in the Global Settlement deal. Magnificent financial properties in the Beaux Arts style jumped up in the years about the change of the 20th century as the Bund developed into a main monetary centre of East Asia.
By the 1940s, the Bund stored the head office of most, if not most, of the main economic organizations in China, which includes the "big four" countrywide finance institutions in the Republic of China era. Nevertheless, with the Communist triumph in the Chinese civil war, many the economical organizations were relocated slowly in the 1950s, and the resorts and golf clubs were shut down or transformed to some other functions. The statues of colonial time figures and overseas worthies that had filled the riverside were also eliminated.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, with the thawing of economical plan in the People's Republic of China, properties on the Bund slowly came back to their previous functions.
In the 1990s, the Shanghai federal government tried to encourage a prolonged idea of the Bund to improve tourism. And property value in neighboring places get back together the marketing of "colonial relics" with the Socialist ideology. In the 1990s, Zhongshan Road (named after Sun Yat-sen), on which the Bund is centered, was widened to ten lanes. As a result, most of the parkland which had existed along the road disappeared. Also in this period, the ferry wharves connecting the Bund and Pudong, which had served the area's original purpose, were removed. A number of pleasure cruises still operate from some nearby wharves.
From 2008, a main reconfiguration of traffic flow along the Bund was performed. The very first phase of the program included the southern part of the Bund, and saw the demolition of an area of the Yan'an Road enhanced highway, including elimination of the big raised expressway quit structure which previously completely outclassed the confluence of Yan'an Road and the Bund.
