- 1). Get your vehicle inspected. Take your car to a certified inspection station to have the brakes, mirrors, lights, horn, tires and seat belts checked for safety. Vehicles being registered in certain counties will also need to have an emissions inspection in addition to the safety inspection. - 2). Gather your documents. You need your inspection certificate, proof of insurance, and out-of-state registration, if applicable. If your vehicle is less than 10 years old, you need to know its odometer reading.
- 3). Fill out the VTR 130-U, Application for Texas Certificate of Title. The application is listed below under Resources.
- 4). Go to your local county tax office. Bring your documents and completed application.
- 5). Pay the fees. The registration fee varies according to what type of vehicle you have. A schedule of fees is listed below under Resources. If you are a new resident in Texas, you will need to pay a new resident tax. There may be additional fees charged, so be sure to check with the county tax office in your area.
