Pathological hemorrhoids, also popularly known as just hemorrhoids, affect approximately half of the population with equal proportion in both males and females.
It is estimated that at least three percent of the population are suffering from the condition during a given time.
The approach to healing hemorrhoids can be grouped into natural methods and conservative medical approaches.
The afflicted person is first directed toward changing his or her lifestyle, coupled with the use of natural home remedies.
When these methods fail to achieve success in healing hemorrhoids, the person is then advised to consult a medical practitioner.
The following details the two treatment options for people with hemorrhoids: 1) Natural methods.
Lifestyle change is the first strategy used to ensure the success of healing hemorrhoids.
The person is instructed to, first and foremost, cut down on weight, especially if obese, to decrease the pressure in the veins.
A high-fiber diet is recommended with lots of fluid intake.
Coffee, nuts, and spicy foods are generally contraindicated as they can cause further irritation of the hemorrhoids.
The person in instructed to practice good hygiene at all times.
Cleaning of the rectal area is done by blotting rather than by wiping.
If possible, moistened baby wipes, which are soft and nonabrasive, should be used at all times.
The afflicted person is advised not to sit for prolonged periods which can worsen the already distended hemorrhoids.
An effective treatment modality in relieving the symptoms and discomfort of hemorrhoids is a sitz bath.
The person is instructed to sit in a sitz bath, small basin, or bathtub with warm water.
This method can significantly decrease the swelling of the hemorrhoids.
The person can also use compress pads with witch hazel which help achieve similar effects as the sitz bath.
2) Medical treatments.
If natural methods prove ineffective in healing hemorrhoids because of the severity of the condition, the person is prescribed to use drugs such as analgesics to relieve the pain, and stool softeners to promote smooth passage of stools.
At times, surgery may also be indicated as a last resort.
The type of procedure depends on which will work best for the person.
